Last Saturday I had the opportunity to use a boroscope on JCE's 300E to check the condition of the foam gasket on the A/C door. In the course of scoping this out, I spotted what appeared to be a UV or ozone light in the bottom of the main box. Is anyone familiar enough with the 124 A/C system and duct work to know what this light was.
I don't think it was sunlight entering the system through the defrosters. This light appeared to be coming from a bulb of approximately the shape and size of a small flourescent tube. The color was reminiscent of the ozone lights that were mounted in clothes driers way back when. Help. This is beginning to bug me, and it's not even my car. Hey, maybe that's what it is John, a bug zapper for dust mites. Oh wait, not in your duct work, it's too clean.

Mike:
I tried to make sense of the "exploded" drawings of the AC components in my owners manual to see if they show anything. There is a drawing of something long and thin that looks like it might have an electrical connection, labeled "132". ![]() I don't know what it is, and the book doesn't say. If nobody knows what this is on the forum, I will try to see if the parts people at the local MB dealer can ID it for me. This may have nothing to do with a light, but is the only thing I could see that looks remotely associated with what we saw (Dust Mite UFO?) ![]()

John,
Nothing in your manual about the door? Should be a section on the inner working of that unit, unless it is a non-repairable item and only intended to be replaced I guess. What is on the back sid eof that page? Looks like it has the squirrel cage and other parts, nothing there?

The item you mentioned in the illustration (132) is a temp sensor, as are (134) and (150). I believe they are all NTC resistors, and I wouldn't expect them to emit any light. Was the fan running when you were peering in there? Maybe you were seeing arcing from the brushes? I'm not aware of anything else inside the heater box that would eminate light.

in the E320 manual,
model 124, the parts are numbered 179, 183 and 167 respectively. This thread actually provides a good "sight" test for all of you out there older than 40.
Techs are these items interchangeable between the various models although they have different numbers in the "catalog of illustrations"? thanks Jim '95 E320 '97 CRV |

Mike:
I checked through the whole book - nothing on the door, let alone the light. I guess they figure if we are able to get that far into the guts of the AC, then we don't need their pictures for help! I will check it out at the dealership next week. Thanks again for your help.

Can't say that I know of a light, except that there are on some models a light that powers groups of optical fibers that carry light to the various knobs and small switches on the console. I don't remember if 124 chassis use these or not.
