I recently bought our Porsche 911 and have been seeking advice about putting it up for the winter. One thing everyone seems to say, just as mentioned here, is to change the oil before storing it and then change it again in the spring before starting it. Why put in brand new oil, only to dump it out? If the engine isn't going to be cranked over, then why have any oil in it. I understand getting the old oil out to prevent corrosion, but why put in new oil to just sit there?

Depends on what you mean by old. The older the oil gets the more acids it accumulates which can erode bearings. If you last changed it within 1,000 or so miles I wouldn't bother changing it before storing it. If you do change it before storing it, I wouldn't bother changing it before driving 2000 miles after taking it out of storage. i.e if you change the oil every 3000 miles like you should, just continue changing it based on mileage and ignore the months of non-use.

If i owned a 911 think heated storage should be considered if practical. Seems to minumise storage aging to some extent in my opinion. You will not even have the condensation problem inherent with unheated storage. (everytime car pases through freeze point it collects moisture and dries out) Just great for electrical switches and body metal. Still better than putting them through salt by far though. Cars I keep in heated storage seem to be about as I parked them years ago in some cases. Unheated storage is another thing. I fully realise in some circumstances and localities heated storage is just too expensive or hard to get. Just my opinions.

Okay so I've tucked 'her' away
I've got the interior out of it too.
I'll be going nuts with the fluid film tomorrow going all around the wheel wheels, inner fenders and such.... I was wondering though....after I put a little oil in the cylinders....should I top up the crankcase entirely with oil? Would anything I'm missing cause a problem? I thought this would be the most effective remedy to combat any possible bearing damage... The car will be sitting for 5 months likely to be 6. What do you guys think? -Mike
