300E Differential seals
My differential is leaking grease on bother sides. Once I remove the diffential from the car is there any trick to popping the left and right drive flange out of the differential. On most cars, you simly use a large screwdriver and leverage them out with a quick pop. Will this technique work? thanks for your help

i think
they have circlips holding them into the diff case.
have you tried changing the diff grease? they seldom leak out those seals. maybe you have something too thin in there. tom w

The differential fluid should be an 80W or 90W gear oil, as opposed to grease. Call the Parts Department at your local MB dealer to verify the proper viscosity.

Yes, thanks for the correction. I have replaced the lube in the last two years with 80-90w. The post that said the flanges are held with c-clips is consistent with my experience with other makes. That would suggest that they can be popped out???

thanks for the info. I was hoping I would have to go inside. So be it. But you are right. MB is not like the other cars with half-shafts. They are making sure those flanges don't walk off anywhere!

Kent I have the MB Service Manual Chassis and Body Series 124 and my section 35 goes to just 35-430 "Checking rear Axle (exposed)" . Your manual has section numbers higher. I got robbed.
I was going to ask another question . Can you tell me how hard to torque the 6-half shaft bolts. The dealer sold me new bolts style. They are external Torx and not the XYN tri-square that's on the car now. |
