Troubleshoot: Clunking front end 95 124 wagon
1995 E320 wagon with 60K miles. Clunking or rumbling noise apparently coming from underneath front right (?) when driving over uneven/washboard type surface. Noise cannot be reproduced when pushing down on right corner from above. All suspension components, motor mounts and bushings were recently inspected and are well within spec. I even removed the underneath plastic spray shield thinking it was loose, but noise still occurs with shield removed.

My E 320 T had a similar problem and it was fixed by replacing all the rubber gaskets of the antiroll bar.
Your suspension components will look perfect, and even the components at the antiroll bar, but the rubber components on this device are very sensible to ageing and will produce unwanted sounds very easily. Change them and see if it helps. By the way, I have vacationed twice at Rehoboth Beach recently (one and three years ago). Great place!

I'll second the suggestion of sway bar bushings. Inexpensive and very easy to change them out.

Bushings recently sprayed with silicone
Interesting that you point to the sway bar bushings, b/c I recently had some squeaking noises that someone suggested were the sway bar bushings, so I sprayed a little silicone on them and the squeaking disappeared; coincidentally that when this rumbling/ clunking started. Any correlation or just coincidence?

I had the same problem in my '95 E420. It turned out to be a broken sway bar bracket (where the bar mounts to the body). It was cracked completely down the middle. Hard to notice until I saw it one day when I was underneath the car.

Sway bar bushings the culprit!
Thanks guys for the sage advice;however, my mechanic suggested the struts and I went along with the program b/c he has 25 years experience. It didn't solve the problem. Granted, the new Bilsteins did improve the ride b/c the rebound on one of the stuts was a little 'bouncy', yet the clunk did not go away til the sway bar bushings were replaced. He only charged parts for the second job. He was a little surprised as well as the bushings looked good and the car only has 60K miles........
