What on earth is this connector in the footwell?

(see attached picture).
Found it loose in my 190E 16v and have no idea what it is .

One single-pin almost coaxial-style connector attached to a standard two-pin connector. That's the seat position handle at the top of the photo.

I measured a voltage at it, when you switch the ignition on it briefly goes to 12v then back to 0v. Oddly, it does not do this if you disconnect the fuel pump relay, suggesting it's related to the engine/fuel system but that may be just a red herring. The wire goes off up behind the dash.
