Battery went dead alt light stayed off

When we went to town the other day the radio shut off then the gauges started dropping then the speedo would go to zero when brakes aplied blinkers would not work.Sure glad it was a diesel !!!
Well I started checking things found that I had power to alt proving wire.Had no power to battery though.Checked at alt and when I touched the plug on the alt I had sparks from inside.
Took alt apart and found that this high quality mercedes rebuilt unit was not so hi in quality. The rivet that holds the bat terminal to the rectafier board was loose. Also when they soildered the windings to the rectafier they melted the plastic.I had a old alt from a 83 240D so I took it apart and the windings were the same. That rectafier had two rivets holding the battery terminal on. Link is to pics of windingsI had wondered why my head lights were so crappy I had put in new bulbs hi wattage ones and it did not help. Well now they sure seem brighter it was not totaly dark though.
