Annoying clicking sound from trip odometer

I reset the trip odometer on my 92, 300D today, and since it is making an annoying clicking sound on every revolution and is no longer counting. Anyone with experience with this problem?
Thanks. Oilburner

Pull the knob back out

When you set it , it did not return to normal position.

Yeah thanks. I've tried all the obvious remedies like pulling, wiggling, springing back out, to no avail so far. I would just forget about it not working but its that irritating noise! Any thoughts???? Will this mean having to disassemble the instrument cluster? I'll look fwd. to that.

I have this problem sometimes. It would count to 9 and then the irritating noise would start. after pushing the reset again it would work normally for some months and then it used to repeat. It did that for atleast a couple of years and then one day the reset button did not work and it stopped completely without the clicking sound.
