Strange noise from the gas tank and the car died...
Dear fellow drivers,
my car is 1988 190e 2.3l In past few weeks I have been hearing this strange noise coming from the gas tank, it sounds like the gas tank is almost empty (but it's far from empty) You know the sound like when you are drinking a coke using a straw and you come to the bottom. even when I refill the tank I hear the sound... Anyway yesterday it just died on me while i was going 15 miles per hour. I couldn't restart the car, but then I waited for 5 minutes and tried again and the car started fine, only to die after 1 minute. So I had it towed. ![]() I did some research and my suspects include: 1) fuel pump 2) fuel filter 3) fuel screen (in the gas tank) 4) fuel pump relay Please tell me your thoughts about this... I really need some input. Thank you Milan |

Are you creating a vacuum in the tank with a clogged tank vent?

I just know that when I remove the gas tank filler cap for refueling, my gas tank is pressurized (the air inside is compressed) . How do I check that ventilation thing?

On my chassis (126) it's on the passenger side: a hose from the filler neck area to above and beside the rear subframe, with a small black plastic valve and ~ 3" hose extension off that.
Odds are its not pressure you're hearing, but, rather, vacuum release.

If it does the same thing with the cap removed, thats not the problem.

Could be a bad fuel filter. I would start there if it has never been replaced as it is cheap and easy to do yourself. Well if you do not mind getting your hands dirty or smelling like gas afterwards.... Also since the fuel tank is accross the back of the trunk I would put my ear to it and see where the sound you are hearing is coming from. Also the fuel filter and pump or pumps and fuel accumulator are all easily accessible as well and can be listened too as well very easily. Get right up close and personal and find where the sound is coming from. Is the sound there without the engine running?

From your description I'm 90% sure you're looking at fuel pump or pumps if you have two. It isn't the filter, because you would have had low power. It isn't the fuel pump relay, because that's under the hood. If you want to be sure do a fuel pump volume test. You should pump a liter in 40 seconds IIRC. Also if a pump has been drawing extra current for quite awhile, you're looking at the fuel pump relay failing soon.
