Strange noise from the gas tank and the car died...

Dear fellow drivers,
my car is 1988 190e 2.3l
In past few weeks I have been hearing this strange noise coming from the gas tank, it sounds like the gas tank is almost empty (but it's far from empty) You know the sound like when you are drinking a coke using a straw and you come to the bottom. even when I refill the tank I hear the sound...
Anyway yesterday it just died on me while i was going 15 miles per hour. I couldn't restart the car, but then I waited for 5 minutes and tried again and the car started fine, only to die after 1 minute. So I had it towed.
I did some research and my suspects include:
1) fuel pump
2) fuel filter
3) fuel screen (in the gas tank)
4) fuel pump relay

Please tell me your thoughts about this...
I really need some input.
Thank you
Milan
