380 se sunroof repair

Hey,

Just bought an 84 380 se last week. The car has a few little electrical probs, but nothing a little cleaning won't fix. The only thing that I'm stuck on is the sunroof. It will not open at all; when I press the button the motor doesn't even click in. I've had the switch apart and cleaned it but still nothing.

My question is, is it possible to get at the motor without having the sunroof open? Will I have to remove the headliner to gain access to the motor and inner bits?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

The motor is in the trunk, left side top, behind the carpeting panel just ahead of the antenna. It turns a cable that runs to the sunroof. The roof can be opened manually by turning the big nut facing you, with a tool/socket that may still be in your toolkit. You might try opening it manually to verify if the cable and track mechanisms are the problem...be careful, in case the cable gets buggered up, as replacing this looks like a real PITA job!
Of course, check the fuse (#16 I think), and the plug connection at the motor. The black wire to the switch should be power from the fuse. I'm not much on reading MB electrical diagrams, but it looks like the blue wire is power to close, green is to open, and standard brown for ground (...and why would anyone want to open the sunroof on PEI in January anyway ??)

Thanks for the help donbryce!!

I had no idea the motor was in the trunk, I figured it would be under the roof panel. As for your question about why I want it open, I just want it to work period. Sure I'm not going to use it anytime soon, but hey!! it was 12degrees on Saturday. I got a chance to test my A/C, and it blows coooold......
