'95 E320 -- No start (tach/gauges dead) -- my fix
Hi all. Just wanted to report in, just in case this happens to you. I was working on the old mustang in the garage yesterday when my wife pulled up in her '95 E320. She said it was making a funny noise. Sure enough, I poked my head in the drivers' side window and there is a "buzzing" sound coming from the dash. I notice the tach and gauges are dead, and the car is running. I shut off the engine and tried to restart.
In the start position, I was getting nothing. No starter engagement. First thing I checked was the fuse panel. Sure enough, fuse #5 had (white fuse --- thin guy, I don't know the amperage) had burned through. Replaced the fuse, she fired right up. I know I've read on this board before how it's a good idea to replace some of the fuses after a number of years. And after visually inspecting some of the "white" fuses, which the element on original fuses are much thinner than the replacements (shrunk from age/voltage running through it/engine heat, perhaps), I replaced a few more of them as a preventative measure. So --- the moral of the story is --- check the condition of your fuses before the old MB strands your wife somewhere Best regards, 71Rcode |

With MY luck, my wife would be stranded at a shopping mall & " punish "me. Nice fix btw.

Hey Manny, thanks!
Oh how I hate the worried tone in her voice when she phones me and the car is acting up. I'm the only mechanic who touches this car, so, it's on my shoulders, you know? Thanks for the note. To me, this was the best kind of fix --- the one that took one minute to diagnose and one minute to repair. You've got to relish those when they come along ---- because they're not very often!
