Hi all. Just wanted to report in, just in case this happens to you. I was working on the old mustang in the garage yesterday when my wife pulled up in her '95 E320. She said it was making a funny noise. Sure enough, I poked my head in the drivers' side window and there is a "buzzing" sound coming from the dash. I notice the tach and gauges are dead, and the car is running. I shut off the engine and tried to restart.
In the start position, I was getting nothing. No starter engagement. First thing I checked was the fuse panel. Sure enough, fuse #5 had (white fuse --- thin guy, I don't know the amperage) had burned through. Replaced the fuse, she fired right up.
I know I've read on this board before how it's a good idea to replace some of the fuses after a number of years. And after visually inspecting some of the "white" fuses, which the element on original fuses are much thinner than the replacements (shrunk from age/voltage running through it/engine heat, perhaps), I replaced a few more of them as a preventative measure.
So --- the moral of the story is --- check the condition of your fuses before the old MB strands your wife somewhere
