Windshield replacement- need recommendations

My 95 E320 Wagon has a long crack in the windshield. I need to have it replaced. Does anyone have any advice about the national chains or any local shops in the Weschester, NY or Fairfield, CT area. How can I tell if they are using quality glass? Thanks, edge.

Call the dealer, and ask who they use. That's what I have done.
You do not want some grunt who knows nothing about MB screwing up
your car. After you find the guy, then ask him whether he has the proper
clips for the trim in case one breaks. If no then someone needs to buy the kit from the dealer. I have heard stories of idiots gluing the trim strips and the roof trim.

My experience on 2 different w-124's is that the guy shows up and does the
R & R right in your driveway. You then need to not drive the car for 24 hours to allow the sealant to cure. It's also important that they use the correct sealant to glue the glass down.

In my opinion paying extra for the Sigla glass is silly. He will probably put in
PPG. Installed cost was something like $250.00 bucks. I play golf with a guy who is GMgr of a glass production plant. I asked the question about differing hardness of OEM versus for instance PPG. He smiled and explained that glass is glass.

Had mine replaced by

Coastal Tinting
(203) 877-8468
70 Bridgeport Ave
Milford, CT

They used the same brand as the original. Can't remember the name, but its on the glass. Had to ask for it.

Tricky part to installation is getting the rubber strip that runs along the bottom of the windshield to set in properly where it goes underneath the wiper assembly. I took my wiper assembly out for the install.

How hard is it to take off the wiper assembly? My glass says, "PPG" with the Mercedes emblem.

The wiper assembly does not have to come off.

Steve's correct, the wiper assembly does not have to come off. I took the opportunity to replace my noisy blower motor; part of that procedure is to reomove the wiper assembly. Not quite sure if I'd have removed it for the sole purpose of the windshield R/R. Anyway, I think I may have caused some unwarranted anxiety.

Thanks, guys. Coastal Tinting came to the house and replaced mine for $220. He was very meticulous and did a great job.
