Cool CL600 ADS Shocks

I have 98 CL 600 V12 with ADS shocks. My warning light comes on in the dask and the ride becomes really bouncy. I think my shocks need replacing. Can I replace with aftermarket Bilstein non ADS shocks on my car? I want to avoid spending big money on replacement ADS system factory shocks. I have found that the fronts are about $750 ea and the rears are about $980 ea from Mercedes not including labor. The Bilsteins are only about $125 ea. Any technical feedback is very much appreciated.

No, you can't is the short answer.

Why do you think it is the shocks? Sounds like a shot in the dark. Pull the code.

If you get an ADS fault your ride will get bumpy becuase the system defaults to firm. Doesn't mean your shocks are bad (necessarily).

This isn't a leave you stranded type of issue so just slow down and deal with the problem. Step one is checking the codes. Hope that helped a little.

ADS is a very complicated system airdam. It's not likely that any one or more shocks will cause the caution light to illuminate. There are many sensors that work together in this system, and any one of them going bad can cause the system to default to Firm setting. I spent a good deal of time on my ADS system, and I have a page that may help you.

Thank you 97slsix and pcmaher for your responses. Your insights helped me a lot about how to approach these problems on the W140. It is definitely not your average car and takes much thinking about chasing a problem. PC Maher, your website is awesome and very helpful. Thank you very much for sharing that info with me. I am also learning about how to replace my instrument bulbs thanks to you. You have both saved me a lot of money and kept me from a wild goose chase. The dealers are only too happy to sell expensive parts and repairs on these cars. I agree - Long live the W140!
