Auxilliary Fan Resistor: Where's it located
For a 1992 300 E where is the auxilliary fan resistor? Is there one or two resistors? Car has two electric fans.

If it's like my E420, it is behind the drivers side headlight. Use a bazillon candle power flashlight, and you will find it easily...it's one of those primitive looking ceramic and a spring looking doo-dads.

Definately where Larry says. Right next to the a/c dryer - that black cannister with wires and tubes running to it...
Interesting side note. One of the few repairs I've had to perform on my 1993 300E had to do with the aux fan resistor. MB redesigned the wiring harness of the 124 in the early 90s. The power wire feeding the resistor was reduced from a 2.5mm to a 1.5mm wire. (Go check your ETM if bored, very bored.) Said smaller wire tends to overheat, become brittle, and break off at the resistor. This results in no low speed aux fans. If you fix it, the same failure will occur again. (Don't ask how I know this.) I replaced said wire with a 3.0mm diameter, all the way back to the aux fan relay in the fusebox. About an hours work to trace, disassmble, and do some soldering. Been fine for a few years now. - JimY |
