Hey guys..my buddy got stupid today (really my friend, not me) and I'm trying to help him out. He lost his only key and I'm thinking that he can call the local MB dealer and give them the VIN# and hopefully get a key cut. Will that work or is he gonna have to get all new ignition and lock cylinders? Thanks in advance...Bill

Yes, after he proves ownership and pays for the key. These are usually not done in house they are shipped after ordered.

For clarity, this cannot be done over the phone, he will have to visit a dealer in person with proof of ownership to obtain a key.

yes usually he will need to personally go to the dealer and prove he owns the car.

I have bought Smartkeys at 2 dealerships in San Diego. Both required proof of ownership for picking up the key, but one allowed me to order the key over the telephone (Hohen). Hohen was also 25% cheaper.
