Lost key...???

Hey guys..my buddy got stupid today (really my friend, not me) and I'm trying to help him out. He lost his only key and I'm thinking that he can call the local MB dealer and give them the VIN# and hopefully get a key cut. Will that work or is he gonna have to get all new ignition and lock cylinders? Thanks in advance...Bill
