96 C280, dealership wants....
50 $mackers to program my new key. I've pressed the transmit button twice, aiming at the rearview receiver and inserted in to postion2 in the column, within 10 seconds, and still no connect.
Can anyone tell me what the dealer will do for my hard earned pennies? and can I do this myself ? Thanks.

For 50 dollars I wouldn't expect much more than writing a ticket and parking the car. That probably represents a half hour labor. I can tell you that the administration of a repair order probably costs most shops an hour worth of labor, from the write up, phone calls, cashier, to the bookeeping. If they happen to make it work also, what a deal. There are numerous protocols and if it doesn't work they will be expected to answer why. Why bother if it doesn't even pay for the paperwork.
BTW, did you try the tap dance with the door closed.

Some time ago I ordered a replacement remote key for the 1997 C230 from a dealdership. When I picked it up, without me having to program it, it worked perfectly.

thanks stevebfl.
I'll add golf spikes to my tap shoes so I don't slip on the ice and give that a try.
