A couple of years ago, (at 57,000 miles) mine were replaced. At the time I was burning about a quart every 600-700 as I recall. Problem was definitely solved.
I have not seen the low oil lamp since and no have had no need to add any between oil changes. (I now have 88,500 on the odo)

I did mine about 6k ago and I'm back to using/burning oil. Smoke at start up suggests exhaust guides. It was worth the try, but now its time to do the head.

We are up to do ours too....
I have a valve spring compressor I used before, but its different to the ones I have seen for the job....
Its this one...

Not unless you remove the timing chain tensioner. Otherwise, you can damage the camshaft when you take the rocker towers off. I did mine with one like this:
