HELP! - Steering rack

Anyone please help:

I am resealing my steering rack on the 1983 380SEC; I did not pay attention and did not count how many steel balls there were inside. I count 23 now but I have the feeling there were 24. Please help!

Greg

24 according to the shop manual (yes, the old paper variety) for the LS 90 gearbox.

I am going to hang myself
I cleaned out my entire workshop and cannot find more than the 23 I started with. Noone seems to carry these 0.275" (6.98mm) balls

Try Ebay for 7mm ball bearings.

I can't (or shouldn't) complain about the weather here in Jacksonville but yesterday was sunny and 75 deg. or so (changed the tranny fluid and filter in my wagon and sent my friends off boating) and today it was drizzly, damp and struggled to get to 55 deg. Can't seem to make up its mind. Mark

again

Hi All,

I removed the steering box from my 1985 W126 as well. Again, I found 23 balls. This time I paid close attention. Any chance that there should only be 23 inside?

The MB service manual states that there are 24. But you never know---the Germans really did put the W126 cars on a diet compared to the W116 cars so one less ball could have saved them 1/4 oz. or so and .01 ml of fuel every mile Mark
