'79 280SL Flywheel question

I've spun the flywheel ring gear (casting#1080320501) on my '79 Euro 280Sl with 4spd stick shift. These are our of production and hard to locate. Here's the stupid question, what if the current ring gears is welded to the fly wheel and then the unit balanced. Does this present a problem? All Opinions welcome.
John

As long as the welds are small enough so as to not overheat and soften the teeth, you should be fine.

Just buy a new ring gear, provided the rest of your flywheel is intact. The part is inexpensive and readily available.
