Here's what I found...

I have '97 E320. Dealer sold me the same filter but it definitely does not go in my PS pump. I looked at EPC that I have and it shows two different pumps, the other of which looks like it would take the top-loading filter. Maybe some experienced MB wrench turner can clear this up.

Correct, the M104 installed in the W140 uses that filter. They use what looks like a very similer PS pump to the one mounted on my 603. Same filter to.

So M104 in a W140 uses that filter.
M104 mounted in a W210 does not.

I used original PS Benz fluid. Cost more but seems to work better. I would just ignor discoloration. Just do it once a year reagrdless of miles. changed both filter and gasget. Good luck

I don't feel so bad now.

The first time I changed mine afterward it looked like it hadn't been changed. I planned next time on disconnecting a PS line on the steering box and draining it that way. After struggling getting one off (then getting it back on) and pouring some clean fluid through till it came out clean, and changing the fluid in the reservoir several times, the fluid still looked like it hadn't been changed
