Question 1980 450SL (w107) deck lid hinge

I am working on a 1980 450SL (w107) right side trunk and top storage
deck lid hinge problem. The deck lid hinge is very stiff on the hinge
pin. I removed the front wall of the trunk to gain access to the pin
and am soaking it with liquid wrench but so far it has not freed up
much. My question is, can you remove the pin without taking out the
fuel tank? The stiff pin seems to be a long-term problem because the
deck lid hinge arm was broken at its weld, repaired (by a previous
owner) and has failed again. The arm is fabricated from two parts,
welded together. It will be difficult to weld again in place, but it
looks very difficult to remove. Has anyone dealt with this problem? I
would sure like your input as how to approach this repair!

Thanks!

I saw your post over on the SL forum, and was confused over which hinge is sticking. Not being an SL owner (yet), I do have the body and chassis manual for the W107, so I looked at the procedures to service the trunk lid.

From the looks of it, you are talking about the hinge pin (MB calls it a 'bearing bolt' I think) that is shared by the trunk lid hinge and the hinge for the 'top well lid' (must be the soft-top storage bay cover, right?).
If the problem is removal of this pin and hinge(s), so they can be cleaned and lubed properly, the procedure looks fairly simple, but not for the faint of heart methinks.

You'll need to remove the trunk lid (or at least the bolts on the side in question) and the 2 torsion bars where they fit into the hinge assembly (as well as probably the attachment to the lid cover). The torsion bar removal from the hinge assembly requires the use of a special tool, a 'mounting lever', which looks like a rod bent to a certain shape and incorporating a set screw/bolt to grip the end of the torsion bar. Maybe you could get a peek at one from the dealer and make your own tool from a piece of heavy wall tubing or rod stock with a piece of pipe welded to the end....as I said, I don't have an SL in the yard (yet) to reference (ask me in late April) so I'm trying to assist from the MB shop manual guide. Someone else who has actually done this hopefully will respond (and probably tell me I'm all wet too! LOL)

Oh, almost forgot, the manual covers two procedures, both titled the same 'Removal and installation of torsion bar spring', 75-130 and 75-135. The first says to remove the partition between tank and trunk, then "Loosen compensating tank (Two sheet metal screws in top well)". The second starts off with "Remove fuel tank". I guess you'll have to eyeball the setup and see if there's room to access everything with the tank in place.
