2000 C230 Transmission Leak
My C230 Transmission is leaking a small amount at the right front (passenger) side just above the pan. There is a cable coming out of what looks like a switch or some type of electric device mounted where it is leaking. What is this item and would it be easy to replace the seal(s) myself. Aside from the problems with measuring the fluid level on this transmission what would the project involve.
The fluid was changed about 25K ago when some warranty work was done so I don't need to change it yet. So far this is the only post warranty problem with the car that now has 59K on it.

What is leaking is your transmission electrial connector. There are two teflon seals that, well, are junk. You will need to replace the transmission electrical connector: 203-540-00-53, new one comes with seals (around $25.00). You will also need on of these: 140-991-00-55, this is the little red tab that locks the cover on your dipstick tube. Also, you will need a dipstick: 140-15-21-00 since your vehicle does not come with one. About 1/4 to 1/2 quart MAY come out once you remove the plug. You will also need 2 quarts of electronic tranmission fluid (recommend the MBZ original stuff).
If you feel up to it, the job is not that bad. If you reside within our coverage area on our website, you can book an appointment for a field technician to come out and replace it for you. $135.00 |

Thanks MB Workshop for the detailed information. Unfortunatly I am about 1500 miles from your service area or I would give you a call. Based on the information you priovided my local Dealer wants about $155 to $175 to do the job. I am running out of time and don't have the dipstick yet so I will bite the bullet and take it in. So far they have been pretty good for Service I just like to know what is wrong and how much $$$ to expect before I take it in.

I just wanted to post the fix and cost for the leaky transmission. I took it to the dealer and it was just as MB Workshop said. The parts were $29 and labor was $114 that with Shop Supplies came to $158. It was starting to downshift a little rough at times but with the addition of a lt +/- of fluid is now back to shifting smoothly. All in all a relativly inexpensive fix. Next time I'll buy the dipstick and do it myself.
Lucky I pull the drain plug to change the oil and take the time to look around for other problems while it is draining. This leak was not bad enough to leave a spot on the floor yet.
