Reading thread #11
Is this thread #11? If so I have read through it. I am wondering if I need both the OVP regulator and the crank sensor. How do I know if I need one or both and if only one which one?

The OVP had failures , so they changed the part to remedy the problem . You want to see the part# on your OVP The new part is 000 540 67 45 , the old is 000-540-52-45.. , If you have the old style , change it to the new replacement and see if that rectifies the problem.. A quick test for OVP is in my last posting to you ,, you tap the relay and try to start the car again. If it starts ,then the relay is suspect of having a problem [ very common] The crank sensor takes some electrical meter testing to verify, but I would start with the OVP b/c of their HIGH failure rate and the part change that Benz took care of. Use the SEarch feature on top of the page and list OVP.. it is all there in the Archieves.. |

OVP/Crank Sensor/1995 C280
Well my mechanic said he checked the ovp and crank sensor and found no trouble with either of them. That my starting problems were not related to any relay problem. He said if my OVP was bad that the car wouldn't start at all. I asked about the new OVP part number and if I had the old part or the new part. He said he'd have to check the computer and get back to me. Can I see the number myself? He got quite testy with me for even knowing about this. Thanks guys for the info.!!!! Do you think the mechanic is "BS"ing me or can there be something else causing the starting problems?

Any Tech who works on Benz and is not aware of the OVP problems Benz had on HFM/SFI engines [ yours] is not hip, to say the least.. it is probably the most common fail rate part of all time...
You have to remove the relay to see the number as it is on the side... if the manufacturer is Siemens, it is the defective part and should be changed to the new model part, regardless of it's condition b/c it is not "Will it fail, but When will it fail". Just the fact that there are enough OVP treads here to fill a NY City phone book tells you how common OVP intermittant starting problems are......... There was also a wire harness problem that he is probably not aware of either ..you may want to search that too. ,, but I would prefer you verify OVP before anything , out of priority. Keep reading the OVP threads and you will see how many guys throw everything but the kitchen sink at the car until they finally changed the OVP to find it to be the remedy....even the Dealers do it. Wiring Harness
I have already replaced the wiring harness, fuel pressure regulator, fuel pump relay and had the connections from the relay to ecm cleanded. The local mercedes dealer forgot to put the gromits in when he replaced the wiring harness! I have recently received the name of another shop in town and will try them. I could tell it really PO these guys that I was even asking about the OVP. Even our local Mercedes Dealership has mentioned nothing about this failure. They all suggest that I wait untill the problem gets worse. By waiting will I cause major problems down the road? Should I replace it now?

Get the part # as has been suggested and next time the car does not start, try and tap it.......
I believe you are looking for a complete positive answer for an intermittent problem and those do not exists... which is why your guys can not remedy the problem.... reread the previous post and give the suggestions a try. I can not add much more....................................... |
