Hi folks!

I'm new to the forum because I'm new to Mercedes ownership. I've got a 85 XJ-6 which we've (my wife and I) pretty much overhauled over the last 8 years and I've gotten tons of advice from the Jag Lovers web site that seems to be a lot like this one. My abilities and facilities are above average but I'm not quite ready to open a shop.

I did a search of rear differential bushings and didn't find any threads on their actual replacement. Lots of stuff about having them replaced but I'd like to know if there is anyone who has actually done it and wouldn't mind sharing their experience. Also, the car came with a parts manual but the manual has no parts numbers or names. Is there a book out there that puts numbers or at least names to the parts? I know there are a couple of control arms down there with bad bushings too but I won't know what to ask for without the names!

Thanks for your help, looks like a nice web site and has some very nice parts diagrams. Still, I'm looking for some advice as to how to remove the differential rear bushings. Have you ever done this?

Bob,

The bushings have a steel outer sleeve. Position is important as is depth. The default answer would be buy the specialty tool for $135 and make sure you get them installed correctly.

But, george has said before he purchased a tool (shop owner), they simply cut the outer sleeve with a hacksaw blade. Installation with a socket, bolt, washer combo.

I was hoping someone would be able to get back to me with some advice about how to replace those bushings. I've got a mercedes manual on CD on the way, but I still don't know if the diff is going to need completely removed to replace the bushings, or does someone have a technique for replacing the bushings without removing the diff.

and I am a DIY'er. Some people were able to built the tool but, I bought the tool. You do not have to remove anything but, you have to support the differential while you work on the bushings. By the way, there are 3 bushings. Two in the rear and one on top of the differential. Due to the limited room to work with, "conventional tools" will not work...If you are interested in renting the tool from me, let me know...I will give you the details on the rental. Since I recently moved, I just have to look for it. As far as directions how to do it. It is simple, remove the bushings while supporting the differential and install the new ones. I did not replace the one on top but, you have to loosen it in order to reach the rear ones. That is it...

There are 3 mounts,

The front mount is a just 2 rubber disc/bushings which sandwich a flange on the diff housing- piece of cake.
For the fronts, HIDALGO is absolutely correct. No need to remove the diff, just move it out of the way.
