I am currently undertaking a rebuild of the diff on my 1984 500sec euro. I have nearly finished but need some help with the final steps, can someone tell me the required torque settings for re assembling the diff (for the bolts that hold the side plates on and also the back plate) and also whether there should be some kind of gasket or seal on the back plate.

I can tell you that the backplate has no gasket. You put a small line of RTV and bolt the cover to the housing. I used Kentucky torque. Those screws aren't going anywhere.

I was planning on using silicone so thanks for the reasurance,

what made you decide on rebuilding it? I have a 88 that is somewhat jerky in reverse and tends to slam when shifted from reverse to drive and vice versa. only slamming when hot. I guess I'm asking what your symptoms were.

A loud bang and a complete loss of drive

The diff I rebuilt is one from a breakers yard that wasnt looking so pretty, I pulled it apart and got busy with the clean up. Lucky all the gears were in good shape. After it was clean I replaced all the rubber seals, checked the bearings and reasembled it. (after de rusting and repainting the outside)

I haven't had that yet, fingers crossed. good luck with your rebuild, I'm sure I will also be doing that one day.

Aren't the procedures for setting lash quite critical........requiring some specialized knowledge and tools?

I've got a decent 3.07 with pinion whine that is now off the SD........the question is what to do with it??

Differential work is a specialists job, no doubt about it. DIY does leave a margin for luck or the opposite....

I didnt go to far with the strip, I only removed the gears from the case to clean, I didnt completely dismantle the internals.
