Supporting equipment for an M120 engine.

Gentelmen

I just purchased a wrecked 1996 SL600 with a good engine and transmission. The intent is to put this engine and trans into a 560SL. I would like to know what are the supporting pieces of electronic equipment necessary to connect to this engine. I will be building a run stand for this engine which so far will include

1) engine and accessories
2) transmission and shift linkage
3) engine computer
4) trans computer if it has one
5) engine wire harness
6) transmission wire harnaess
7) fuel pump and filter
8) Fuel tank
9) radiator.
10) Cats and O2 sensors.
11) OBDII diagnostic port
12) Batery Starter, and universal ignition switch.

Is there anything I might be missing here, especially things like electronic modules that may be bolted to the firewall or under the dash that are required to support the engine.

Also what is a CAN bus. Are there components utilizing the CAN bus that are required to support the engine.

Plan is to get engine running in car clear of codes before removing engine from SL600. Then get engine running in stand with clear codes, before placing engine into 560SL. Then get engine running in 560SL clear of codes. Then have a blast.

The CAN BUS is the computer management system ubder the hood that links stuff like ASR(ESP on some models), ADS, ABS, Throttle Body Actuators, SRS, safety systems, and all of those other little goodies. You can check the error codes from under the hood by using that thirty-something pin connector under the hood.

Other than that I think you just about have all of the nails hit on the head. Best of luck to you in your quest to make an old school V12.

It appears that there may be some other issues with this setup. I saw on the SL forum discussions about ARS and when it is not working the engine goes into limp home mode. If I am going to run this engine on a stand will I need an ARS system hooked up with all its sensors or is there a way too fool the computer and make it think ARS is on and fully funcational and the wheels are not spinning?. Make it act like a mechanical linkage.

What other features may be involved besides ARS? I can just picture this car requiring the radio to be installed for the engine to run correctly!!!!

John, You are gonna have a LOT of ancillary crap associated with the 12. It is managed as 2 seperate 6CYL engine managements and ignitions. To function properly you will need both ECMs, both ignition modules, the base module, the diagnostic module as well as the EIS, and EA's if it is an electronic trans (don't remember for 96) then you will also need it's module as well as the shifter quadrant. You will need to adapt an accelerator pedal switch to generate a signal as expected. If you expect to keep the check engine light off you will have to update the car to to the same evaporative emissions standards including both purge valves and the cansister shuoff valve. The ASR could be a huge problem too. Don't recall seeing a 12 without it. It has the potential to cause problems with the throttle control leaving you with a 1500 rpm ceiling,ie limp mode. You may be bending a lot of new brake lines and fabricating wheel speed sensor triggers and mountings before it's satisfied.

Of course a pair of programable managements and mechanical throttles would simplify a lot of this. How bad do you want to keep it OE? You have an enormous amount of work in front of you to go OE. You are gonna have to get your hands on all the wiring diagrams for your donor. You don't stand a chance without them.

This is kind of what I expected. In fact this is why I bought the whole car instead of just an engine and trans. Keeping it OE is not too much of a concern, infact a set of webers sticking up through the hood has crossed my mind but then I still need to control ignition on an engine without a distributor. I can invision having a bundel of wires going to sensors mounted in the trunk of the car that sense nothing but trunk air. The car has ASR and the concept of making it work on the 560 has also crossed my mind. It also has a 5 speed automatic trans which I do belive is electronic, I dont see this being a problem.
