Greetings Fellow oil Burners,

Hopefully a quick question about zert grease fittings on a 1980 123 chassis. I currently have none installed on the car and was wondering if MB was like American cars, where you must install them yourself? If that be the case are they 6mm in size?

No zerk fittings to be found here. They stopped on the 108 chassis S-Class. But just for kicks, and information, there were 16 total. 7 at each front wheel and 2 at the rear diff.

Why mention a lubrication system and points to lube

Greetings Aaron,

I can't imagine why they would mention points of lubrication in the manual if there wasn't a way to grease them. Are we expected to run our moving chassis parts dry until they wear and require replacement?

There are still numerous "lube" spots on the modern MB. But not in the suspension. The spots vary by model but some of the spots are: door strikers, door hinges, hood hinges, throttle linkages, door seals, hood latch and plastic hooks (rear of 126 hood), door stays, etc.

The suspension components are sealed and lubed for life (their life). It turns out that this really works better than non sealed joints that have to be lubed. The problem with non sealed joints is that water can get in where the grease gets out. Having to lube every 3000 miles would play he** with the modern service schedule.
