1994 S500 Steering Wheel Adjustment Problem
Hello:
I have a 1994 S500V Sedan with 81,xxx miles and about one week ago the steering wheel has stopped being able to be repositioned upwards. When I was adjusting the wheel – I quickly realized this and stopped moving the wheel downwards. Now the wheel sits pretty low. Besides it being too low for comfort, it’s also blocking the instrument cluster. When trying to reposition the wheel upwards by using the knob there is no motorized sound of any sort. Additionally, when holding the knob upwards and trying to move the wheel with my hand upwards – no movement. Has anyone come across any thing like this before? Thank you so much. JD

JD, I've fixed that problem before, the drive mechanism has broken and your steering column will need to be replaced.
 The adjusting mechanism has a "worm gear" drive and there is a plastic coupler between the worm gear and the drive motor. This coupler has broken and is not available as a seperate part.  If you are VERY mechanicly inclined you could remove and disassemble the column and machine a custom replacement for the broken coupler.

I guess I should add that the above applies after confirming the switch is working properly, though I've never seen that switch go bad.

Thank you so much for your prompt reply. So when you say that the whole steering column needs to be replaced - what cost range are we talking about. It sounds pretty pricey - and I dont know if this is a "do it yourself" - b/c I dont want to fool around with such a vital part of the vehicle. Any additional insight that you may provide would be amazing. Also - if you did it yourself, how much were the parts roughly and is the steering column something that can be replaced, easily? Thank you, JD

Come on all, check the power supply, if all is good (fuses), the switch or electric motor is bad. You will need a test light. If the motor is bad, and you need to move it before you can afford to fix it, smack the motor on the steering column with a hammer while trying to move it with the switch. If you cannot take the lower dash apart, you need to see a mechanic. It is just a pain to have someone try to take the dash or some other part apart and then just end up taking it to me. Then its all apart and they bit** about having to pay for parts they lost.
