95 C280 Help
Hey everyone,
I'm new to the MB family as i have just bought a 95' C280 with only 80k miles. There are however a few small problems with which i was hoping some of you could help me with: * Speedometer light is not working * Horn is not working * Sometimes fuel gauge does not work, but after a good "tapping" it comes to life * Passenger headrest does not work * Belt occasionly squeeks on ignition, but only sometimes and usually quits when put in reverse or drive I think that about covers it, i have checked all fuses (although i couldn't find a listing for a horn fuse..?)and they seem to be in good working condition. Any advice is well apretiated. -Adam |

The fuel gauge issue may be a faulty fuel sender unit. Try searching for your particular model and year using the search function. There's lots of good stuff here, and I'm sure that you can find what you're looking for.
Good luck! -Michael

is the fuel sending unit in the dash? Also, the SRS airbag light is staying on..does that mean airbags are not functioning?

I believe that the fuel sending unit is located in the bottom of the tank. You will have to drain the tank and access the units with special tools.
The SRS light could be a number of things. One possibility could be that the weight sensor by the seat is malfunctioning, or perhaps there might be a voltage issue and the SRS system is not getting enough juice, and it's producing a fault. Hopefully someone with a little more mechanical expertise will chime in! -Michael

i wonder why it would make a difference if i tap on the dash that the fuel meter started working...considering that the sending unit is under the tank?

Sounds like a short in the dash somewhere with the speedo light and fuel guage. The belt squealing will be fixed with a new serpentine belt. As for the headrest and horn, check fuses - especially for the horn.

The SRS contact rings and brushes inside the steering wheel could need replacing.
So could the horn fuse. I think your car came with a few spares in the fuse box didnt it?

I checked the fuse guide (in the trunk and under the hood) for the horn fuse and can't find where it is. Is it integrated with somethign else?

for the headrest you can remove the back cover of the seat theres 2 srews under the back cover. and when you get inside see if there is a broken plastic piece where the headrest slides up and down. i have the same problem 95 c36 havent bothered fixin it.

I'd just like to throw a quick update at you and thank everyone for their help. The speedo light just needed a new bulb. The belt tensioner needs replacement (hence the squeek only on start up)..apparantly the tensioner contraption has some small rubber pieces that need replacement regularly on w202's. Fuel gauge just had a bad connection..was unplugged and plugged when the speedo light was changed. The SRS airbag light is still on, and i think is somehow related to the horn not working. ( i checked fuse and it is O.K.). The technician (who does not work for MB) said the diagnostic machine for the srs light came up with a faulty spring and that would be a couple hundred dollar fix..YIKES. anyway..thanks for your input. -Adam |
