How Hard is Replacing Transmission

I have a 1989 560 SEL that has lost reverse. I am along with two very good mechanic friends replacing the transmission. None of us have worked on mercedes before. The one works for a GM shop and the other used to work in a tranny shop. I want to know if this is plausible before spending this much time and money. i can buy the kit for about $200 and I will give them a couple hundred each. Probably pay $1000 bucks... But I can buy a rebuilt for 1500.

Question is If you have ever replaced a transmission in one of these cars how much extra work is there? And any special tools required due to mercedes factor? Any info appreciated...
Post thread or e-mail jesse@ny-yankees.net Thanks again
