How Hard is Replacing Transmission
I have a 1989 560 SEL that has lost reverse. I am along with two very good mechanic friends replacing the transmission. None of us have worked on mercedes before. The one works for a GM shop and the other used to work in a tranny shop. I want to know if this is plausible before spending this much time and money. i can buy the kit for about $200 and I will give them a couple hundred each. Probably pay $1000 bucks... But I can buy a rebuilt for 1500.
Question is If you have ever replaced a transmission in one of these cars how much extra work is there? And any special tools required due to mercedes factor? Any info appreciated... Post thread or e-mail jesse@ny-yankees.net Thanks again |

Except for the large I believe 41mm and 46mm wrenches for the driveshaft, no special tools are needed. A few years ago when I was temporarilly with out a lift, I did one on jack stands. Of course a set of professional tools makes the job easier than using the run of the mill DIY tools.

If you lost reverse, isn't there an adjustment on the outside of the transmission that comes loose causing that? Or maybe that was an earlier edition than yours? Also, isn't the B2 pack the cause of losing reverse in most transmissions and that can be done in some/all with the transmission still in place. As you can tell, my transmission knowledge is a little shaky since I've never had the privilege of having to do it. I'm just trying to recall some info from previous posts that I seem to recall. Maybe a search will bring you an easier solution.

trans
the trans you have in 560sel is easy one to take out if you have access to lift if not then watch out it is heavy.reverse has its own set of clutches they can be accessed by taking off torque conv remove front pump carefully pull out front drum then by moving the pins on the front band you can get it out and there is the reverse cluch pack.soak the new clutches[4]in trans fluid before inserting.you also need access to compressed air so that you can air check the reverse piston that comes out of the front pump.sometimes it comes out at an angle if the seal leaks and can be cause of no reverse.good luck, david poole e. p. dallas texas.

There's a service manual available from ATSG for about $30 which gives some R and R instructions. Book is probably 5 or 6 hours to R and R.
