Problems with 1989 300E Alternator

We have been having problems with our 300E alternator. I have owned the car since 1992. It always seemed like the battery was just a little undercharged although I would have it checked out and they would say the alternator was okay. In the meantime we replaced window operators several times and other electrical components.

In 2002 I replaced the alternator. I gave the car to my daughter and while she was on a trip last year the alternator gave out again. She had it replaced and now it is giving out again.

I am wondering if this is a weak spot on this car. I saw in an article that someone recommended replacing the alternator with a S420 alternator and converting the clip to the two post setup. What are the three posts on the plug and what does the conversion entail?

Thanks,

Jim Marshall
