lets talk about m110 ignition timing

To start of iam going to say that when it comes to ignition timing iam not very knowledgeble. I own a w116 280s Euro model, i say it is a euro model becuase i am from south africa and the car was bought new here, in other words the car was manufactured here in South africa.

It has the standard Solex 4a1 carb, wich is still in perfect condition, the ignition system however doen not appear to be standard. There is no ICU nor white ignition ballasts, these were removed by the previous owner. In there place the guy fitted the car with a ordanary coil, and inside the distrubutor has a points and condenser set up. The piont is connected to the (-) side of the coil. There is no ballast in the system. The system works, but what implications can this have?

The problem i have is when i set the timing at 4500rpm with the vacuum disconnected at 28 degrees BTDC, and i reconnect the vacuum it advances to 52 degrees. In other words an advance of 24degrees, i know that the advance shouold be around 12 degrees, what can cuase this over advance?

i have set the dwell to 39degrees.

Hi,Being In ZA you should be able to Source the correct ballast and coil from a wrecker( there two types of ballast, one blue, one red alloy bracket) .You have to have the ballast to prevent the points burning up prematurely.the Ballast effectivly allows 12volts to the points while starting and 6volts while running.
The W114 280 has the same igniton setup.
South Africas Mercs are very similar to ours,we don't have the little reflectors like yours...thats the only difference.
As for advance,it sounds as though the mechanical advance springs are too weak ,I think a distributor swap would be a good idea before that 'advance' destroys your pistons from preigniton.

The euro 110 has no electronic ignition for the carburettor version, only for the injection version.

Dwell should be between 39 and 42. This is very sensitive, 38,5 will give very bad idle.
Advance with everything connected should be 36-40 at 4500rpm and -4 to -6 at idle.
This means that timing is delayed and not advanced at idle.

On the carburettor you can find three vacuum lines, the one towards the centre of the engine should be attached to the idle delay, the top one on the other side to the advance and the bottom one to the carburettor and fuel valve.

Question M110 Ballast Resistors

Thanx For The Replies! Can Anyone Indicate How The Wiring Diagrams Will Look For The Two Ballasts, How Does The Switch From 12 Volts To 6 Volts Takes Place? I Just Need An Explanation From The Wire Carrying 12 Volts From The Keyswitch To The Coil. At This Moment I Only Have 12volts At The Coil That Can Be Switched By The Key.

M110 Ballast Resitors

I SUPPOSE THAT WOULD HAVE TO RUN THE POWER FROM THE IGNITION SWITCH TO THE BALLAST RESISTOR THAT LOWERS THE CURRENT TO 6VOLTS, THEN RUN A WIRE FROM THE STARTER SOLENIOD TO THE OTHER RESISTOR, THUS GIVING THE COIL 12 VOLTS WHILE CRANKING? IS THIS CORRECT?

THEN WHY RUN THE 12VOLT WIRE FROM THE SOLENIOD THROUGH A RESISTOR? YOU NEED 12 VOLTS WHILE STARTING

WHY DO MERCEDES RUN THE 12 VOLT STARTING CIRCUIT TROUGH A RESISTOR?

The wire from the solenoid should go directly to the ignition coil, not trough a resistor.
There is one other resistor, but that one is for the heater fan.

What Rating Must The Running Circuit Have 0.4 Or 0.6ohm Resistence

Thanx In Advace
