Question Is there supposed to be a safety for this problem?

My 1989 190E 2.6L Gas/Auto MAY OR MAY NOT have a problem.

A brief story:
My wife leaves the car running in a parking lot waiting for a passenger. My 3 year old daughter unbuckles her car seat (which is the mercedes rear seat belt with a booster chair) and makes her way to the shotgun chair. My wife steps out of the car while its running to do something (unknown at this point) and the toddler yanks the car into REVERSE! Luckily, MB has really high gear ratio for reverse and it didnt go very fast, but my wife ran and dove in the car and threw it in park.

Now my Question:
Is there supposed to be a safety for this problem?

Notes: I visited a junkyard 1993 190e 2.6 and i couldnt get the shifter out of park without busting it off (probably.) The car can be taken out of reverse with the key on or off.

What do you think?

I am not certain but was it in 86 or 92 that a brake interlock was mandatory to prevent unwanted shifting from park without the brake depressed.

Luckly all the W126's didn't have that stupid feature. I am 99% sure the W140's were cursed with it.

I'm pretty sure my 91 300SE had the brake pedal interlock. There's an instruction decal on the shift gate if so equiped.

I'd say something about leaving a child in the car but that's a pretty bizarre event. Our 1 year old managed to undo her carrier buckle and rode her carrier like a surfboard until my wife checked in the mirror to see why she'd stopped crying.

Talking The brake/shifter feature can be a good one

I use my left foot on the brake, always. Actually, that is what professional driving instructors teach you to do, contrary to all the state driver's test questions that insist you need to use your right foot! Accordingly, I always have my left foot on the brake when I am shifting out of Park -- so don't pay much attention to the safety system. It really is good to have on there in some cases. I will have to check to see if my 420SEL and 300CE actually have that system on board. I don't think my 68 230S has it and don't know about the 99 ML. BC

the only time i left foot brake is if i begin to take off at say an intersection and need to brake really quickly. then the left foot comes out and brakes before my right foot could react.

it seems quicker than the right in this situation.

my 350sdl has the brake interlock thing and it only very occasionally is noticable.

switching gears while the car is moving will ruin a tranny quickly. this feature prevents that.

(obviously) you should never leave a car running with a child in it.

we all do though.

There are two things to prevent such an event and none have to do with the manufacture of the car. First never ever leave a car running with a child in it and no one in the drivers seat or watching said child. Try good parenting skills. Nothing against you or your wife but this happens all the time and the older vehicles of course do not have the interlock feature that the newer ones do. I think it was 94-96 area that they mandated this feature but I would have to look it up.

Second thing you can do is get the wife to use the Parking Brake, that is what it is there for and it will hold the car or at least slow it to a very slow crawl. A small child would be hard pressed to be able to push the button to drop the brake handle.

And I might add that it is against the law to leave a child un-attended in a car. You do that on a military base if in the service and you will be thrown in the brig the second the MP's notice. I knew a person whose wife was when she left the child in the running car in the parking lot to go get a pack of cig's! She was only gone a minute or so but the MP saw it and that was all it took. They take being a responsible parent pretty seriously just liek everyone else should.

I''m impressed by what these little kids can accomplish, though the two stories about the three year old and one year were really cute.

I just wanted to say that on my C-class, application of the brake pedal and accelerator (hill in the snow) at the same town can cause the BAS light to come on and I couldn't turn it off until the car was restarted.
