1997 E320 Transmission and a puddle
All,
About six months ago I went through a rather large puddle with my 1997 e320. The transmission begins to slip. Today, the garage tells me there is water in the transmission and the damage is perminant and will cost $3500 to fix. I thought these transmissions were sealed. How could water get in? Also, the car has 190,000 miles, is it really worth to fix since total maintenance needed is about $7,000 for re-built trans, rotors, brakes, shocks, A/C, and tires. |

seems to me an engine would succumb to water damage before a transmission would. thinking about height of air intake and location of transmission breather.
The trans started to slip soon after going through the puddle? And I think trans fluid with water in it shows tell-tale signs of water contamination. |

Do you have any atf in your cooling system? The radiator had a transmission cooler in it.

Before you spend anything like that sum, please read the guide I made on changing the ATF. Your box will be identical or very similar:
http://mbclub.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=23969 The cost for you will be no more than $200 I estimate, and may well be worthwhile just in case the garage are trying to get you to spend lots of money unnecessarily. |
