hey, whats up? I have a 1998 c280 benz. just turned 105 k miles on it. for the past week, the gas light has been flashing like it is empty yet there will be plenty of gas in the car. any suggestions? almost a problem with the windshield wiper. sometimes no matter what u do it will just keep going and going no matter if you turn it off. is it a blown fuse or do i need a new motor? mitchell.glass@gmail.com

when the gas reserve light flashes it is indicating a problem in the fuel tank purge system, i believe it indicates a major leak. it will eventually set a code and turn on the check engine light. tha first thing i would check is the fuel cap, see if it is on and tight.

you should smell the gas if it's leaking..

it is under vacuum, the regeneration valve pulls vacuum on the tank using engine vacuum, if a specified value is not reached with in a certain amount of time, the light will flash. it isn't necessary to smell gas to have this issue

Regarding your wiper, if it continues to operate after you switch it off the problem must be either the wiper stalk switch shorting out or the relay sticking shut,I would try the relay first. It is in the compartment at the back of the main fusebox in the engine bay;Part#.0025421419 I think.Before replacing it open it up , give the contacts a squirt with contact cleaner and see if that helps.

A new cap, purchased thru Phil at MercedesShop, cured the flashing light problem on my 1997 E320. Easy to replace but a little tough to get the filler door aligned just right in its opening.

It comes on and off. not on all the time. it is maybe on 20 percent of the time. what does everyone recomend doing? what parts should i look for to fix this problem?

You have a evap system fault. A shop will correctly have to diagnose
it and verify the OBD readiness tests.
Likely there is a leak at one of the following.
1. Gas cap seal
2. Canister shutoff valve
3. Purge valve
4. Evap line
5. Canister fault
6. Tank fault
7. Or a faulty tank pressure sensor.

Don't guess, get it tested and diagnosed.

i am sure he wants to try and save a few $$$ and do it himself, but your point is valid and i agree 100%

I guess, I just hate to see people shotgun parts at a car
to see if it fixes it. They usually end up in a deeper hole
dollar wise than if they had it diagnosed at a shop.

if i didn't know how to diagnose that system the most i would do is the cap. if it were more, i would take it to a shop. i am just providing the requested info.
