1981 380sl 3.8l 107 oxygen sensor

Problem:
Lambda system is not functioning (supposedly due to a bad or non function o2 sensor).

I bought a new bosch sensor from *********************** and it does not come with the original connector. So they say to cut the old o2 sensor off and use that plug by crimping onto the wire (to preserve the OEM connection).
However, what I noticed as I removed the o2 sensor is that the plug that the o2 sesor plugs into has exposed wire in the beginning (the plug on the sensor portion is fine, but on the part that's on the car is not). So what I was wondering is should I just cut the whole plug system off and crimp on to a fresh piece of wire? I realize it will make it hard to change the sensor again, but oh well, got to get it workin.

By the way on this car is wire shielded or not shielded?

Thanks much.
