1981 380sl 3.8l 107 oxygen sensor

Problem:
Lambda system is not functioning (supposedly due to a bad or non function o2 sensor).

I bought a new bosch sensor from *********************** and it does not come with the original connector. So they say to cut the old o2 sensor off and use that plug by crimping onto the wire (to preserve the OEM connection).
However, what I noticed as I removed the o2 sensor is that the plug that the o2 sesor plugs into has exposed wire in the beginning (the plug on the sensor portion is fine, but on the part that's on the car is not). So what I was wondering is should I just cut the whole plug system off and crimp on to a fresh piece of wire? I realize it will make it hard to change the sensor again, but oh well, got to get it workin.

By the way on this car is wire shielded or not shielded?

Thanks much.

Can you put some heat-shrink insulation on the exposed wire? And no, I do not believe that the wire is shielded.

I don't think the wire is shielded. I've been mulling this problem over myself. I got an O2 sensor from a 90's Ford Mustang that is supposed to be a perfect substitute (at 1/5 the price) but I discovered that Ford no longer sells the mating connector (or at least that's what the dealer says).

It gets really hot there and I don't think even excellent heat shrink tubing (or even solder, for that matter) will survive if anything lays against the metal; make certain to dress the wire away from everything.

update

What I was trying to convey was I think the wire is exposed because someone yanked on the connector and thus I believe it does not make proper contact and was wondering if anyone had an idea of how to check that and or I was wondering it would be OKAY to chop it off.

Thanks.

test

As a test I grounded the o2 plug on the frame and the car rpm's dropped so it's working. So what I will do is cut off the old sensor crimp the new one and preserve the old OEM connection.

yes

I bought the new bosch sensor that came with the crimp and the shrink tube. In the instructions it says to cut off the old sensor and crimp this new one to the same piece of wire to preserve the plug.

My question was, should I just cut it off after the plug, in case on mine the plug is the problem?

yes, just be sure the wire you cut is the same wire like the sensor,

good point

Good point, I did not think of that, however the instructions for o2 sensor say that it will work for shielded and none shielded.
