hard to steer

Well, just came back from the dealer, test drove an '86 and '87 420 sel. My conclussion is my power steering system is in need of repair. Mine is too heavy compare to '86 and '87 that I test drove. I'm gonna check the pulley and if the size is correct, I'll be in the junkyard this weekend. Any advice is welcome and will be apreciated. And of course I'll be greasing all the fittings of the front suspention including the rear.

I checked my pulley yesterday after work and it is 127mm. So what do you think guys? worn-out pump maybe? I may have time to grease-up the suspension tommorow ( Saturday ). Anyone here who want to sell a known good used pump? Thanks everyone. I prefer a local pick-up. I'll try the Potomac German Shop? in Maryland.

It's hard to advise on this one, because I've never encountered the problem in 30 years. I would guess the problem is not in the pump. I only got you thinking about the pump in cade someone installed the wrong pump or pulley. If a pump isn't grinding or leaking it should work fine. I wonder if someone didn't rebuild the steering box incorrectly or if you don't have a binding front end component. I guess the next step is remove the pitman arm from the box to try to isolate the problem.

PS: I've thrown away dozens of these pumps, because there is no call for them.

I'll certainly do that to isolate the binding if there is. I know it's hard to give advise without seeing the car in personal thats why admire you guys in this forum. So far all I've been reading in this site are very helpful. Thank you.

Red face

Dear Doctor: Don't know if this will help or not, but I have a 1990 420 SEL that i recently purchased and am repairing gradually, the first thing was the steering. My mechanic replaced the idle arm and did did some major front end work like the bearings, ball joints, gaskets etc. What a difference this made in the steering, it's so unbelievable smooth and precise I called and asked my mechanic if he gave me back the right car. Just my 5 cents worth.

Sure it will help, I will check all you've mention, anyway I have'nt inspect my suspension for a while, geez I think it's in 1994 when I greased all the fittings. Thank you all.
P. S. Congratulation on your new car, all I can say is I love my 420sel which is the same car. Still smell like brand new ( leather ).
