Question 124 Rear Seat Hdrest

Hi everyone , I have been unavailable and not on this forum for a couple of years , so here goes. I am finaly getting my 92 500E back on the road after fire damage from the dual fuel pump compartment. I am going to sand blast and scrape the area under rear seat and reseal with herculiner ( the corrosive in the fire extinguisher did damage ). At this time the car is not running so I can not drop the rear headrest. The headrests in the up position prevent me from pulling the rear seat back up enough for removal. I can reach into the trunk and feel the locking mechanism for the headrests but can not determine if it is possible to drop them manualy. Any help . I have sand blasted as far as I can without removing the seat and am ready to get my baby back on the road by weeks end but I want to do the repairs correctly and permanently.
Thanks
Alan a.k.a. Beastie

If you connect the battery cables and turn the ignition switch until the trouble lights are lit then the rear seat headrest release switch will work ... no need for the engine to be running.

here goes

Fred , I will give it a shot. I just picked up a new battery and am doing a check to make sure no bear wires are touching anything ( a long story as to why ). I looked at the locking mechanism for the headrests and it looks like they have a small vacum diaphram on both so I believe they are vacum operated . However they do not show in the diagrams I have as part of the vacum system. Thanks for the response I will let you know how it goes. This car has sat in my garage on stands for 4-5 years. Here goes !.

Thanks

You need to remove the trim pieces that surround chrome arms. Then you can use a screwdriver to press a latch on each mechanism through hole that trim covered. There is a latch for each arm and you just press the headrests out towards the back as you release each latch.

Or start the car.

Or find the vac line in trunk and use a vac pump to release them.

Hope this helps
