1985 560sel
A close friend of mine just bought Saturday a 1985 560SEL at an auction. I am sort of cunfused though. I thought the 560SEL's started in 1986. Don't they also have a 5.6 liter engine? His is a 5.0. He got it for $500. and it runs and drives perfect. Needs paint and seats are a little crackly. Everything works even A/C. When we ran the vin # it came up as a 2001 some other model. The bumbers are half the size as our other W126's. Would this be a Euro model??

Yup, it's a Euro car. You can tell other ways they have weird options like crank rear windows, one heated seat, true duals, quite a bit quicker, vac adjustment stuff for the lights, DOT Green tag on door, etc
I don't recall when the 560 came out in Europe. Sorry.

If its a 5.0 then its a 500SEL badged as a 560. The euro 500 has more power than a US 560 either way. The 560 came out in europe late 85/early 86 (referred to as 86> though)

It sounds like a fun car. One of the last of the euros, as the 560 engine was introduced with partly the idea of destroying the gray market which by 1985 was using serious inroads into MBUSA new sales.
By 1986 the gray market pretty much was over, with the new 560 engines available and the dollar-dm changed more in favor of the dm.

So many neat things came from the Grey Market in the '80s... like my BMWs and this 280S I am going to get. Heck, the 280SL I'd rather have with a five speed over a 450 or 560SL any day.

The 560 was available in 1986,(late year 1985). This was true for all markets.
The Euro 500 had slightly more hp, but I think less torque than a US 560. The US 560 suffered mainly due to the exhaust system. If you were to put a proper exhaust system.. then you should have more power out of the 560. That is not all thats different between a Euro and a US model, but its a big one. Euro vins start with wdb(then chassis #).. 126.037 = 500SEL 126.039 = 560SEL |

They really are quicker; they came in Europe without cats in those days, so they had to be converted to US specs. Many converters were fly by night operations that tended to botch the conversions, and that meant some bad ones are out there. I once took out a W126 280SE euro out for a test drive and it was surprisingly peppy for a large sedan like that one was. I don't know if the standard shift was available in the 500SE/SL but I don't think so. You could get a R107/W126 manual in euro spec though and converted, there were some of these brought into the USA.

Unfortunately no V8 manual was available since the early 70's. I think a 450SL was offered with a manual.. but not 100%. I don't know SL's well. Regarding the w126, I have seen 260,280 and 300 models with manual transmissions. Again, none of these are V8's |

A 280S/SE/SEL is a really quick car with that motor, it's nice. Not sure why you couldn't get a manual behind a V8, ~300hp and similar torque isn't enough to really hurt one.
