Manual conversion has begun!!

Donor: '88 300E 5-speed manual
Donee: '90 300E 4-speed auto

I have located a donor car ($800) and have finalized discussing the project with my mechanic. The conversion will begin soon. I'll try to post as many details as I can.

I have read all the posts regarding this issue but I would like to clarify a few points:

1. The swap should bolt on, correct?
2. What are some difficulties we may encounter?
3. Where the heck do I get a new clutch from?
4. How many hours of labour sound reasonable for this kind of conversion? (We're talking expert mechanic)
5. If anybody needs parts from the donor car, let me know.

Thanks guys, Andrei

Having done this on a 123:

1. The swap should bolt on, correct? YES
2. What are some difficulties we may encounter? BALANCING THE OLD FLYWHEEL TO THE NEW ONE
3. Where the heck do I get a new clutch from? ANY PARTS SUPPLIER OR MERCEDES
4. How many hours of labour sound reasonable for this kind of conversion?
16-20 SHOP HOURS (We're talking expert mechanic)
5. If anybody needs parts from the donor car, let me know

regarding the flywheel.

unless it is different on a 124 most flywheels are neutrally balanced. some are not. be sure to mark your flywheel and your crank before removing the flywheel.. upon removal have it checked for neutrality. if it is neutral you need to make the flywheel you install neutral as well if it is not. if your engine has a non neutrally balanced flywheel your new flywheel must be balanced to match as noted above. the proceedure is explained in the fsm.

i have had both neutrally balanced flywheels and non neutral in my experience, which is all with 123 cars. the 124s may be the same or different, i dont know.

good luck

Andrei, I did this a few years ago. Its basically intellegent grunt work as everything is remove and replace. I.E. the clutch hydraulic line now goes out where the trans kickdown and reverse light switch harness was. There is no neutral safety switch (the switch on the pedal is for cruise control), although if doing it again I would wire in a neutral safety switch. Had no problem with flywheel (didn't check balance), reused clutch and PP (showed almost no wear) but did replace the T/O bearing and the pilot bearing in the end of the crank. Shifter replacement took time only due to the wires needding to be moved to r&r (also the shifter sorround wood is different). Contact me if you have questions, I'll try to help. Replace the shifter and trans linkage busings, check the flex discs. DB calls out different engine mounts for the MT, I left the AT ones in. Recently changed on principle using the MT parts, noticed no change.
