Not a normal DIYer, special tools & dial indicator is required to set "free-play" on the bearings...special socket needed to tighten nut.

Also pressing the bearing off/on the hub is required...that uses tapered bearings,

bearing replacement

i agree with mb doc.this is not a diy job.that hub will be seized in there.find an independent who has the tools[special socket needed to remove inner hold nut and then to preload new bearing] including a very large slide hammer. david poole dallas tx.

setting?

Hi, I'm looking for the setting for the end-float on the rear hub bearing for my '84 280E. I've got the proper tool to tighten the nut but I'm having trouble finding the end-float setting to determine how much to crush the spacer.
Cheers

Thumbs up Job Done!

Hi Folks, just thought I'd let you know that the job is done and dusted.
Not quite as scary as you were making it out to be, I got the special tool for the nut, coupled up to a 3/4" power bar with scaffold pole extension for extra leverage and after that I just used a hammer and punch to remove and install the bearing races. I got a mate to hold on the foot brake to let me do the nut tightening, checked the bearing play and job's a good un!
No job's too big if you put your mind to it.
Cheers
Kenny
