Your article was helpful, I read it beforehand, and printed it out, but didn't need to look at it again. It really is a straightforward job. Anybody who needs a new chain, go ahead and do it, it really is that easy!
I only used two pairs of vice grips as well. I held the chain tight to to the sprocket with my hand when moving the grips around 90'
My guides looked alright, One had slight wear. They weren't the originals though, they were stamped 1988. Also the chain I took off already had a split type link, so I dont think that was original either. My mileage is currently 138k.
My fan was pretty easy to get off, I've had it off a couple of times recently. Once when changing the radiator, and once when doing the water pump.
