I have a 1979 450 SL that seems to have a clunking noise (it sounds like from the rear) when I first take off and only if I try to leave a little hard, if I drive off slow it does not make the noise. It will not do this in any other gear but from first to second, only when I first drive off, all shifting seems to be very tight (no slipping) if i start to hear it and I get out of the throttle it will stop.
Any HELP would be appreciated. ![]() |

is your tire slipping?
if so you may be experiencing wheel hop. this can be caused by a worn shock or by loose rear suspension bushings. tom w
