Shift Linkage on a 126

Hey everone,

I replaced the Neutral Safety Switch on my 91 560SEL. Pretty easy, straightforward job except for that horrible little screw at the top that is really hard to work with.

I got the new switch in but ran into a problem putting the shift linkage back onto the switch. The firt hole on the clamp at the end of the linkage goes over the linkage rod fine, but it seems like it needs to go through the second hole to fit snugly, and also hold the pin from the Neutral Safety Switch in place. I can't find the right position to go through the second hole.

The car was in Park when I started the job. I've verified the shift selector is in Park, and even had someone sit in the car and move the selector through all the different gears trying to realign it, and I just can't find the right spot.

Question: Since I know the car was in Park when I started, am I supposed to spread the opening on the clamp and use a bit of force to fit it back on in Park position? Or should it slide easily back all the way down, and therefore, I've done something really wrong?

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thank you!

The top hole is the one it was originally in, and that's the one with the nylon-ish bushing right?

The Outcome...

Gilly et al.,

Ok, so the resolution to this was to have the car towed to a local shop I use for smaller stuff. Nice guys, but not really into my car, as the owner had one for a long time and doesn't enjoy working on them.

They put it on the rack with everything in place as I'd left it, went and got a hammer. One guy held the linkage in place while the other guy smacked it twice and then they put the bolt back. Done.

They asked for $20, I gave them $60 because they did it on the spot and didn't laugh at me.

And the moral of the story is: Craigers needs to pay attention to what it looked like before he puts his grubby hands on things so he'll know when a good whack will fix things.

Thanks everyone.
