very odd problem

hi guys. i recently installed a new temp gauge on 86 w124. the old one had a 4 prong connctor and the new one had 5. so i cut off the plug in the car and directly spliced the wires into each of the prongs. the temp gauge works great, but when i turn on the headlights, it shuts off. what's up with that? thanks
