PLEASE ADD TO: List of causes and fixes for ASR Limp home mode problem

Hi all,

As the ASR limp home mode is a rather common issue with Benzes, I thought it mnight be a good idea to list all the causes and fixes that other members have experienced.

The first I guess would be the stop light switch, as a few members have pointed out. But what else can cause limp home mode?

Marty

The forum seems generally burned out on ASR light. You might try a search - there's so much stuff in the archives.

Right, there is alot of stuff on the ASR, but it's so disorganized, I'm trying to organize the information into one thread.

Try reading Menu#24 on my web site. It pretty much details the various DTCs that occur for a V8, W140/C140 Mercedes.

The problem usually begins with the ASR light and the "limp-home" mode. And it gets worse from there!

There's also a number of places that can repair your ETA.

You're in good hands with JimF and the info on his website.

"There's also a number of places that can repair your ETA".

Just wanted to add that ASR/LH problems weren't fixed by having Bechmann "repair" my ETA '92 400E. Within 6-9 months the problem returned.
Please don't take this as a rebuff of Jim's advice which otherwise has been a great help to forum members.

So what did you find that was wrong?? Probably the wiring harness; if it hasn't been replaced, you may want to look into that.

ETA repairable??

Jim, I had the harness replaced way before attacking the ETA. It would seem that the Ref Pot as you have correctly mentioned numerous times in your Web site was shot. Bechmann simply shipped back a re-wired ETA which in short order malfunctioned and left the car once again in LH mode. I have sold this car to the OP who has a great deal more mechanical experience (and patience).

ASR Light

I had my ASR light and SRS light come on with start up. The car would go in to the Limp home mode. The dealer said the codes indicated a faulty Electronic fuel regulator that cost about $600.00.

I knew the battery was old since I bought a 96 SL500 with 21,000 miles. I decided to get the battery checked and the crank voltage was low. I replaced the battery with an Auto Zone, reset the codes as described in the book and have not had a light come on since.

Hard to believe, but I suppose possible, that Beckman would be "rebuilding" ETA and not replacing the potentiometers - that's one of the principal causes of failure. By the way the potentiometers on that car on replaceable without sending them out to a rebuilder.

Low Voltage is common on both ASR and ABS lamp faults... see it on cars that sit for long periods with Alarm systems left ON ...battery drains after just a few weeks ...

Hi Benznovice, Thanks for the car, it is such a pleasure to actually drive something with less then 101K miles (Daily driver about to turn 290K - 1983 300SD) I have started a thread (before this one) to track my progress and issue's.

It is here: ---> Got me a gasser,,, 400e 1992 but the ASR,,,

That's when I thought it would be a good idea to start a single thread with every known cause of ASR problems.

Marty
